Google Forms Header Image Size and How to Add One
Make your Google Forms header image 1600 x 400 pixels, a 4:1 shape. Google refuses anything under 800 x 200. To add it:
- Click the palette icon at the top right.
- Under Header, click Upload.
- Drag the frame in Position Header and click Save.
The right Google Forms header image size
The header image is the wide banner above the form title. Respondents see it first, so it carries your logo, event name or brand photo.
Make your header image 1600 x 400 pixels. That is a 4:1 shape: four times as wide as it is tall.
People call the same strip the Google Forms header size, banner size or header dimensions. One number covers all of them.
Google's own minimum is 800 x 200 pixels. We tried a 400 x 100 picture. The editor refused it: "Your image is below the minimum allowed resolution of 800 x 200 pixels".
An 800 x 200 image is accepted, but it looks soft on a large screen. Twice that size stays sharp.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | 1600 x 400 pixels |
| Minimum size Google accepts | 800 x 200 pixels |
| Shape | 4:1. The crop frame is locked to it |
| File type | JPG for photos, PNG for logos and text |
| In inches, for a print tool | About 5.3 x 1.3 inches at 300 dpi. Set the size in pixels if you can |
Any bigger picture works too. Google crops it to 4:1 and lets you choose which strip to keep.
A square photo loses the top and bottom. A tall phone photo loses most of itself, so start with a wide one.
How to add a header image in Google Forms
- Open your form at forms.google.com.
- Click the Customize theme palette icon at the top right.
- Under Header, click Choose Image.
- Click Upload, then Browse, and pick your image. Or choose one from Themes, Photos, Google Drive, Google Images or By URL.
- Drag the frame in Position Header over the part you want, then click Save.
- Click the Preview eye icon to see the form the way respondents will.
The Theme panel also holds the font, colour and background settings. More on those below.
Where the image can come from
- Themes: Google's own headers, sorted into rows such as Work and School, Illustrations, Birthday and Food and dining. Already the right shape.
- Photos: your Google Photos library.
- Google Drive and Google Images: added in May 2026, so older guides don't mention them.
- By URL: paste the web address of an image. Google shows a preview and a note that you need the licence to use it.
- Upload: a file from your computer. This is the one to use for your own design.
Crop and reposition the header
Every image goes through the Position Header screen. A frame sits over the picture in the 4:1 shape. The corner handles move the frame; they don't change its shape. Two buttons under the picture rotate it.
- Drag the frame up or down to the strip you want.
- Rotate the image if it came in sideways.
- Click Save.
To change it later, hover over the header and click Edit Header Image. To remove it, open the Theme panel and click the X next to "Image uploaded".
One thing surprised us. As soon as we saved, Google changed the theme colour to an olive tone from the photo. It does that with every header.
If you want your own colour back, choose it under Color after you save.
Make your own Google Forms header image
A photo from your phone is rarely the right shape. A header you design is, and it can carry your logo and the event name. For an RSVP form or a quiz, that is the first thing people notice.
- Open Canva, Google Drawings or any image editor and start a blank design. Or use our template below.
- Set the size to 1600 x 400 pixels. In Canva, use Custom size and type the numbers.
- Add a background colour or photo, then your logo and a short title.
- Keep the logo and text away from the edges, in the middle 80 percent of the canvas.
- Download it as a PNG and upload it under Header.
Because the design is already 4:1, the Position Header frame covers the whole picture and nothing gets cut off.
Example: a workshop sign-up header
| Layer | What we put there |
|---|---|
| Canvas | 1600 x 400 pixels, dark blue |
| Left | The company logo, 200 pixels tall, 120 pixels in from the edge |
| Centre | "Spring Workshop 2026 Sign-up" in a bold white font |
| Right | The date in a smaller line |
Keep the text large. On a phone the header shrinks with the rest of the form. Twenty-pixel lettering turns to fuzz.
Change the colours, fonts and background
Everything else about the look of a Google Form lives in the same Theme panel. Here is how to customize Google Forms beyond the header.
| Setting | What you can change |
|---|---|
| Text style | A font and a size for the Header, the Questions and the Text. Each has its own dropdowns. The defaults when we looked were Roboto 24, 12 and 11. |
| Color | Twelve theme colours, plus a + to type any hex colour. |
| Background | Four shades that follow the theme colour, from white to a deeper tint. |
The font list is fixed. You pick from the fonts Google offers; you can't upload your brand font. Match the nearest one and keep the brand colour exact with the hex code.
Add a logo to a Google Form
Google Forms has no separate logo slot. The header image is the logo slot. Put the logo in a 1600 x 400 design, as in the example above, and upload that.
Two habits keep it looking right:
- Use a PNG with a plain background. A logo on a busy photo is hard to read.
- Set the theme colour to your brand colour with the hex code, because Google will otherwise pick a colour from the image.
Fix common problems with Google Forms headers
| What happened | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| "Unable to insert image. Your image is below the minimum allowed resolution of 800 x 200 pixels" | The picture is too small. Export it again at 1600 x 400 or larger. |
| The header is blurry | It was under 1600 pixels wide, or a small image was enlarged. Start from a bigger original. |
| The wrong part of the photo shows | Hover over the header, click Edit Header Image and drag the frame. |
| The theme colour changed on its own | Google matches the colour to the new header. Pick your colour again under Color. |
| The logo is cut off at the sides | The picture was not 4:1. Design it at 1600 x 400 so the frame covers all of it. |
| You can't find Customize theme | It is the palette icon at the top right of the editor, not in Settings. Respondents never see it. |
| The font you want is not in the list | Only Google's listed fonts are available. Choose the closest one. |
Tips from building a few headers
- Design at 1600 x 400, not bigger. Larger files take longer to load on a phone and gain nothing on screen.
- Test on a phone before you share. Open the preview link on your phone. If the title in the header is hard to read there, make it bigger.
- Use one header for a series of forms. Respondents recognise it, and you only design it once.
- Save the design file. Next year's event needs the same header with a new date.
Where Google Forms design stops
A header, three fonts and a colour cover most forms. Past that, Google Forms keeps its own layout and its own branding.
| What you want | Google Forms | FormNX |
|---|---|---|
| Header or cover image | Yes | Yes |
| Theme colour, fonts and background | Yes | Yes |
| Your logo in its own place, separate from the header | No | Yes, on paid plans |
| A welcome page with an image before the questions | No | Yes, on paid plans |
| Your own CSS for exact spacing and buttons | No | Yes, on paid plans |
| Form with your branding only | No | Yes, on paid plans |
In FormNX the design settings start with the same basics on the free plan: colour schemes, fonts and a background.
Paid plans add a logo and white label, a welcome page with its own image, and custom CSS for the rest.
