How to Add a Timer to Google Forms
Google Forms has no built-in timer. To add a time limit, install a timer add-on:
- Click the three dots and search for "timer".
- Install one, open it from the puzzle-piece icon and set the minutes.
- Share the link the add-on gives you, not the normal form link.
Locked mode is not a timer. It only stops students switching tabs, and only on school-managed Chromebooks.
Does Google Forms have a timer?
No. Google Forms has no countdown and no per-person time limit. The closest built-in setting closes the whole form at a date and time you pick, which is one deadline for everyone. It doesn't give each person 30 minutes from when they start. See how to close a Google Form for that setting.
For a real time limit you need an add-on, or a form builder with a timer built in.
Add a timer with an add-on
- Open the form and click the three dots at the top right.
- Choose . The Google Workspace Marketplace opens.
- Search for "timer" and pick one. Popular options include Timer for Google Forms, Quilgo and ExtendedForms.
- Click Install and allow the permissions it asks for.
- Back in the form, click the puzzle-piece Add-ons icon in the toolbar, open the timer and set the time limit.
- Share the link the add-on gives you.
The last step catches people out. The add-on shows the countdown on its own page, which then loads your form. Anyone who opens the normal Google Forms link skips the timer completely.
Check these before a real test

What locked mode does
Locked mode is Google's setting for distraction-free school quizzes. It is often mistaken for a timer, but it has no clock at all. While a student takes a locked-mode quiz they can't open other tabs, browse other websites or use other apps, and some extensions and keyboard shortcuts are switched off.
To turn it on: open the quiz, click Settings , make sure Make this a quiz is on, and under Chromebook settings turn on Locked mode .

If a student exits the quiz or opens another tab, Google emails the teacher. It emails again if the student reopens the quiz within 30 days.
Set up a timed exam in Google Forms
To conduct an exam in Google Forms, the timer is only one piece. The other settings are already built in:

- Shuffle the questions under Settings, Presentation, so neighbours don't see the same order.
- Add the timer with an add-on, as above.
- Close the form at the end of the exam window, so late attempts can't come in.
- Turn on locked mode if your students use school Chromebooks.
Where Google Forms timers stop
Every Google Forms timer lives outside the form, with its own link, permissions and plan. That's fine for one class quiz. For recruitment tests, training assessments or anything outside a school, the extra pieces add ways for the test to go wrong.
